Board of Directors
PARNL is a volunteer organization, run by a Board of Directors comprised of residents. The Board generally meets monthly to discuss matters relating to the business and affairs of PARNL including Association governance, policy, annual operating budget development and national conference delegation.
Members of the Board are elected at the Annual General Meeting of PARNL which takes place during the month of August of each year. Nominations may be made two weeks in advance or from the floor at the AGM.
The Board consists of the Executive, Board of Directors and Council.
The term of a Board Member is offset from the regular Academic Year (July to June of following year). A typical term would run typically from August for 12 months.

PARNL Executive
President
The President provides strategic leadership and direction for PARNL. They serve as the primary representative and advocate for our members. They ensure the organization’s mission and values of advocating for residents, fostering engagement, and promoting well-being are central to all decisions and initiatives.
- Chairing monthly Executive meetings and bi-monthly Board meetings
- Attending and preparing for monthly meetings with the PGME Dean
- Member of negotiations committee
- Helping with the operations of the executive
Past President
Provides guidance to the current President and acts as a resource to the Executive and Board.
- Attends all meetings of the Board
- In the absence of the president, presides over the Board and annual and special meetings
- Member of negotiations committee
- Attends meetings with the PGME Dean, as necessary
- Creates and distributes a survey to the Board to evaluate PARNL’s leadership and structure
- RDoC member representative
Finance Director
The Finance Director oversees the association’s financial planning in collaboration with the Executive Director ensuring transparency and responsibility. Their work supports the sustainability of programs that engage residents and promote wellness across the organization.

Communications Director
The Communications Director leads all internal and external communications, ensuring clarity, accessibility, and connection. They engage and unite residents while amplifying their voices to the PGME office and the health authority.
- Attending the monthly Executive meetings and bi-monthly Board meetings
- Manage the PARNL social media pages (Instagram and Facebook) to share information to our members
- Manage the resident emails and inquiries
- Prepare the meeting agendas and minutes
- Helping with the operations of the Executive
Resident Engagement Director
The Resident Engagement Director designs and leads initiatives to connect residents across programs and disciplines. Their work strengthens community and fosters a sense of belonging for our members.
- Attending the monthly Executive meetings and bi-monthly Board meetings
- Plan the PARNL socials including the beginning of year and Holiday socials
- Coordinate Resident Appreciation Week
- Assisting in the planning of the yearly AGM
- Helping with the operations of the Executive
Medical Education Director
The Medical Education Director advocates for high-quality, equitable, and resident-centered training experiences. By working with stakeholders in the education of our members, they ensure residents’ learning needs and well-being are prioritized in policy and practice.

- Sitting on the Appeals Committee and Faculty Council
- Assisting residents and representing PARNL during accreditation

PARNL Board
Resident Doctors of Canada Representative
The RDoC Director represents the Association at the national level, liaising with Resident Doctors of Canada to align on shared priorities. They ensure the voice of PARNL members is reflected in national advocacy efforts and help bring national initiatives back to support local engagement and wellness.

Internal Affairs Representative
The Internal Affairs Representative strengthens internal operations, governance, and collaboration within the association. Their focus is on transparency and cohesion, enabling the Executive and Board to effectively advocate for and engage with residents.

- Participating and preparing for monthly meetings with the PGME Dean
- Assisting residents and representing PARNL during accreditation
- Sitting on the SAS/PESC committees
External Affairs Representative
The External Affairs Representative builds relationships with external stakeholders, including NLHS, PGME, and government bodies. They champion resident needs and priorities, ensuring strong advocacy and representation beyond the organization.

- Collaborating with and providing insights to NLHS in recruitment and retention efforts

Resident Wellness Representative
The Resident Wellness Representative leads initiatives that promote the well-being of our members. They ensure resident wellness remains at the forefront when liaising with PGME and NLHS and cultivating a supportive and inclusive environment for all.
- Attending the bi-monthly Board meetings
- Representing residents at LWS meetings (learners well-being and success), wellness working group and EDI groups
- Member of negotiations committee
- Assisting the Resident Engagement Director with wellness events
- Attending OHS meetings
PARNL Council
Discipline representatives on the PARNL Board act as liaisons between the resident body and the PARNL Board.
Responsibilities of PARNL Board members include:
- Attendance at all PARNL Board meetings or committee meetings at which the individual represents the Association.
- Carry out individual tasks assigned at Board or Committee meetings at the direction of the Chair and in consultation with the Executive as required.
- Review relevant material of the agenda before meeting.
- Promptly acknowledge all communications concerning PARNL Board or Committee work.
- Participate actively in all discussions.
- Share relevant information and experience with the group.
- Understand and respect other ideas or conflicting viewpoints.
- Tackle problems objectively and impersonally.
- Remain on the subject of discussion; ask for clarification on any point or problem as necessary.
- Accept and follow through on assignments, respecting deadlines and parameters of assignment.
